Like many of you this time of year, I try to keep an eye on what storms are churning up in the Atlantic. As I watch Lee inch toward us, wondering if it will make that right turn, it occurred to me that I don’t have renter’s insurance. Honestly, it’s not something I’ve given much thought to before.
I think about the tenants who were forced from their home due to fire last month. They were fortunate. They were in a muti-unit building and they were spared while all the other units suffered severe damage. They could have lost everything. What would I do if that happened to me? Whether due to storm or fire, I would have to start over from scratch. That’s just not in the budget!
So, I’ll be reaching out to my insurance company today, before the storm is too close. (Did you know they stop issuing policies when a storm is within a certain distance from you?) Maybe my car insurance company will give me a multi-policy discount. Maybe I’ll get a policy through the Tenant Portal. Either way, I’m going to make sure it covers flood, storm damage, and fire!
